2005 05 11 Kanab

Today turned into a simple but long drive. I went out to the Coral Pink Dunes, getting there at 6:00 for the sunrise. But it was much colder than I expected, and even though I made the drive our, it was too cold to do any shooting. It was about 30 and I didn't have gloves or a decent hat. I just wasn't expecting temperatures this low. This was lame of me. I knew that if I went out on the dunes with the temperature at 30 I would simply be too cold to get anything done.

Missing the dunes was annoying, but I knew that the loop drive south and then east from Kanab on 89A towards Page AZ is a good one. Highway 89A climbs as it goes east and goes over 7000 feet as it gets to Jacob Lake, the junction that leads into the primary Grand Canyon NP site on the north rim.

After dropping down out of the mountains around Jacob Lake you drive along the edge of the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. This is a spectacular run of highway. I shot a lot of panoramics at various points on this drive.

After this I drove back west towards Fredonia and Kanab. Just west of Fredonia on 389 is the road south to Toroweap. As much as I wanted to do this, the sky did not look interesting enough to justify the drive.
